Where Katanga's copper story began
Kolwezi sits inside the richest copper-cobalt belt on the planet — a fact that has shaped, and complicated, this region for more than a century. This tour takes you from the earliest colonial-era workings of the Union Minière du Haut-Katanga (founded 1906) through independence-era nationalisation, to the modern industrial mining that powers today's battery and electronics supply chains.
You'll walk decommissioned open-pit terraces and stand beside century-old headframes with a guide who has often worked in the industry themselves — many of our mine heritage guides are retired geologists, surveyors or former mineworkers who explain not just what you're seeing, but what it was like to work it.
From designated, authorized viewpoints, we also show you the scale of the active mega-mines that now define Kolwezi's skyline — safely, at a respectful distance, and always with prior authorization from site operators. We do not enter active operational areas.
What a typical day looks like
Collection & colonial-era sites
Pickup from your hotel or residence in Kolwezi at 8:00am. Visit a preserved early-20th-century headframe and processing structure, with historical photographs and firsthand context from your guide on the Union Minière era and the labour history behind it.
Decommissioned open-pit & geology stop
Walk the terraces of a decommissioned open-pit, learn to identify malachite and heterogenite ore by eye, and hear how nationalisation under Gécamines in the 1960s–70s reshaped the industry. Shaded rest stop with cold drinks and snacks included.
Mega-mine viewpoint
From an authorized public viewpoint, take in the scale of one of the world's largest active copper-cobalt operations — a striking contrast to the morning's colonial-era sites. Full-day option adds a second viewpoint and a visit to an artisanal mining cooperative that has transitioned to formalised, safer practices. Return to Kolwezi by 4:00–5:00pm.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to visit these mine sites?
Yes. We only visit decommissioned sites and designated public viewpoints that are pre-authorized by site operators or local authorities. We never enter active operational zones, and safety equipment is provided where required.
Will we see child labour or artisanal mining conditions?
We're direct about this: informal artisanal mining does exist in this region and is a real part of Katanga's story. Our itinerary focuses on formalised, cooperative-run sites and does not stage or seek out visits to informal sites, out of respect for the people working there and to avoid "poverty tourism." Guides will discuss the topic honestly if you have questions.
Can this be combined with the Cultural Immersion tour?
Yes — many guests combine a half-day mine heritage tour with an afternoon village visit. Ask us on WhatsApp and we'll build a combined itinerary.
Do I need a hard hat or special clothing?
Closed-toe shoes are required. We provide hard hats and hi-vis vests for the sections that require them; no other special equipment is needed.
